Obesity Causes Climate Change
October 27th 2009
Researchers are now beginning to blame climate change on people eating habits and the more obese a person is the greater damage they may be causing to the worlds climate change.
Phil Edwards of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine says, “food production accounts for about 1/5 of greenhouse gases, we need to do a lot more to reverse the global trend towards obesity”.
The average overweight/obese person is responsible for an extra ton of carbon dioxide emissions per year, when compared with his/her healthier weight counterpart. The WHO is estimating this translates into an extra 1 billion tons per year.
According to a 2007 United Nations report, animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of the world’s greenhouse gasses, more than all forms of transportation combined. More food production is needed to sustain Overweight people and meat consumption among these people are number contributor to the problem.
